Dave & Cheryll Entriken, 2640 Tunnel Mill Rd., Webster City This farmstead was always known as part of Silvers Hallow. It’s timber ground was a life saver to many farm families during the depression years. In the back hills, was an abandoned coal mine and many neighbors would come and chop out coal and wood to heat their homes and stove up their cooking stoves. During these times the barn served as a gathering place to warm up a bit after all the work of loading their horse drawn wagons. Cheryll’s father, Clinton Stemsrud, used to tell the stories of coming to gather coal during the 1930’s, in the depression years. He said that during a severe snow storm some neighbors got disorientated in the timber and they told of having to follow the fences to find their way out.
In 2002, David decided to tear out the old cement flooring that the hogs had destroyed and to side the barn with red steel siding. Since he no longer was in hog production, he turned the barn into a wonderful workshop. Today it is not only used for farm and family projects, but also is utilized for working with county 4-H’ers in various project areas.
