Randy & Kristi Hetland - 3761 Wilson Ave. Story City, IA George Ness, Randy's great-grandfather, purchased our farm in 1900 from Andrew Christiansen Tjernagel. The Nes farm in Norway looks out over a fjord toward the ocean to the west and is surrounded by mountains on the other sides. Evidently George had a great sense of humour, as he named our farm, "High View Farm." It is also said that George and a neighbor argued over who had the highest spot in Scott Township. They finally hired a surveyor to measure the two hills and settle the argument. The High View Farm hill was declared the highest.
Our barn quilt was constructed with a patriotic theme to honor the memory of Kristi's father, who was awarded two Purple Hearts and a Bronze Star during the Korean conflict, and her nephew, who was killed in action in Afghanistan in 2002. Our barn quilt is patterned after one hanging on a barn in Jefferson County, Indiana, titled "American Flag."
Absent a barn, our quilt hangs on a metal machine shed constructed by Randy and his father in 1982.
