The Hild Family, 2280 Neely, Webster City Dr. Synhorst from Des Moines bought the farm in the 1930s, and we think the barn was built in the 1940s. Some used lumber still remains of the original construction.
In the beginning the barn was used for farrowing sows on one end, and there was an outside finisher open to the south. Horse stalls were in the front portion. A brick silo was connected to the barn on the south side, and this was used for silage, which was pitched out by hand. The silo had to be torn down because bricks were falling off and it became dangerous.
In 1976 Bob and Mark Hild converted the barn to a nursery and finisher for hogs. An 8x10 foot pit was dug for manure storage. It was used for many years. In 2007 the pit was filled up and the “Hild Brothers” (Charlie, Lucas and Tanner) use the barn for lambing sheep. Hay is still put in the mound every summer for winter use.
The Hild family has rented this farm since 1960 from the Synhorst family. Mark is the second generation to farm the land. Charlie graduated from high school in 2006 and is a junior at Iowa State University studying animal Science. Grandparents Bob and Ramona Hild made the barn quilt blocks on the west side of the barn to honor Charlie’s graduation. The quilt block on the south side of the corncrib was added in 2007.
