Alvin and Elaine VanLangen, 3066 Little Wall Lake Rd., Jewell The farm was purchased in 1980 by the VanLangen family. The barn that sits on the property was built out of wood and poles in 1963. Its original function was for cattle, but today it is used for storage.
The pattern, Fifty-Four Forty or Fight came about following a boundary dispute between the U.S. and Canada. In 1818, the US and UK established a joint claim over the Oregon territory – the region west of the Rocky Mountains and between 42° North and 54°40’ North. When running for president, James K. Polk used a platform of taking control over the entire Oregon Territory and adopted the slogan “Fifty-Four Forty or Fight.” Negotiations established the boundary at 49° with the treaty of Oregon in 1846.
